Pregnancy and High Blood Pressure
Thinking about getting pregnant? Getting your blood pressure under control first would be a great idea. Being pregnant and hypertensive brings with it risks of complications, chief among them preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is the second leading cause of maternal death in the United States and is also associated with low birth weight, stillbirth, and premature birth. Ifyou take medication to control your blood pressure, discuss pregnancy with your doctor. Some blood pressure medications are contraindicated during pregnancy, but you should not stop taking your medication unless your doctor specifically directs youto do so.

High Blood Pressure and Your Kidneys
If you are hypertensive, it would be a good idea to talk to your doctor about the state of your kidneys. Long-term high blood pressure puts a lot of stress on the kidneys and will eventually damage the nephrons, which are delicate structures inside the kidneys that are responsible for filtering the blood. Like high blood pressure, the first stage of kidney disease is often asymptomatic but can be identified with a simple test. Reaching the second stage of kidney disease (chronic renal failure) has more dire consequences, as most people who experience chronic renal failure progress on to end-stage renal disease. End stage> renal disease is an irreversible condition requiring either kidney transplant or dialysis. Symptoms of kidney disease include a decrease in the amount of urine or difficulty urinating, edema (especially in the lower legs), and increased frequency of urination, especially at night.

Diabetes and High Blood Pressure
Diabetes coupled with high blood pressure delivers a deadly double-whammy to your circulatory system, eyes, and kidneys. Additionally, diabetes can exacerbate or even cause high blood pressure! Increased insulin in the blood (Hyperinsulinemia) and volume expansion due to increased insulin and sugar in the body (which in turn causes the body to hold onto salt) will also increase blood pressure. High blood pressure coupled with diabetes also increases the risk for kidney failure and blindness. Diabetes alone doubles your risk for heart disease - add high blood pressure in with it and your risk is quadrupled. The American Diabetes Association recommends that adults with diabetes work to keep their blood pressure lower than 130/80. This can be achieved through a combination of diet, exercise, and doctor-prescribed medication.
